Solarwinds re-build

Solarwinds refresh at the University of Warwick – Case Study
About the University of Warwick.

The University of Warwick is one of the UK’s leading universities with an acknowledged reputation for excellence in research and teaching, for innovation, and for links with business and industry. Founded in 1965 with an initial intake of 450 undergraduates, Warwick now has in excess of 22,000 students and is ranked in the top 10 of all UK university league tables.

Network summary.  Enterprise grade environment.

The University places great importance on their network with over 6,000 students in residence.  The dependency on the internet and wifi enabled portable computing is very high in the student community and is often a significant factor when selecting a University.  Hence the IT team must deliver an enterprise grade network to the University.

High availability in core and distribution, huge capacity and consistent configuration makes the network reliable.  Yet HA environments can fail and go unnoticed, hence the importance of monitoring with the right tool which is Solarwinds.  The University were at a point where they wanted more from Solarwinds, they wanted it to be more proactive.  Audent were consulted as a Strategic IT partner for advice.

The Audent solution

A key factor requested from Audent during consultation was to make Solarwinds more proactive so that it could be used for capacity planning.  In addition to this reporting needed to be aligned to specific needs, dashboards needed to resemble structure and thresholds needed to be adjusted for a comprehensive view of the network.

The solution was a 5 day consulting exercise involving consultation, planning, creation of dashboards, reports and threshold adjustment to build a holistic view of the network and its capacity.  Finally a report was written to summarise the exercise and ensure documentation was available for reference.
